Painting Technique - Ella's Pink Lady

This section describes the approach I used in the painting of Ella's Pink Lady.

ellas pink lady 1 1. After sketching out a number of possible arrangements I eventually selected this one. Acrylic monotone grey was used to sketch in this scene.
ellas pink lady 2 2. Oils are now used to build up the sea shape and general sea colours. I have decided to show some sunlight on the water in front of the yacht.
ellas pink lady 3 3. The colours have been added to the yacht hull and the orange storm sail and some details on the structure supporting the solar panel and wind generator.
ellas pink lady 4 4. This is the stage when I have started adding detail to the sea including wave shapes and the foam on the waves.
ellas pink lady 5 5. More details have been added to the cockpit area and the writing on the hull and sails has been added.
Shadows added to water and transom.
ellas pink lady 6 6. The yacht's wake has been added together with more details on the superstructure and the sea darkened with a transparent layer of prussian blue. Jessica has been positioned in the cockpit.
ellas pink lady 7 7. Rigging has been added. The wave on the side of the hull has actually been photoshopped in at this stage as a trial to help me decide position before I paint the wave. Sometimes I will sketch the waves in on paper stuck to the painting until I'm confident on the final wave details to be included.
Ella's Pink Lady process 8 8. The wave on the hull has now been painted in and final detail added. I also felt the area in front of the yacht looked a bit bare so I have added a wandering albatross soaring towards the yacht. Jessica's face is directed slightly upwards looking towards the albatross or the set of the reefed mainsail.
